I recently picked up the paper and read a very interesting advertorial. This is an advertisement that looks an editorial. It was the “Amish Heaters” Advertisement. You may have seen it on TV or seen it in your local newspaper.

Those who have a GREAT understanding of lead generation wrote this Ad in my opinion. I could take time to break down the whole article but you could do a whole study on this ad and the discussions would be endless.

What I want to focus on is the Headline and the “sub-headline” What was the purpose and then what was the intent. The purpose of the headline you would think would be to sell more heaters and yes that is the end result they are looking for but take closer look and you will see that there is allot more to this headline. What was the Intent.....

The intent of the ad is the ultimate question that we need to come to a conclusion upon and that is whether or not they wanted the reader to believe they were getting the complete heater for free or not?

Lets take a look at the headline:

It’s purpose is to share some “GOOD NEWS” that you may not have heard or need to know. This does a few things:

Makes a news worthy announcement
Acts as an endorsement
Pre-qualifies readers by placing heaters in the headline.
Creates curiosity to read more
The word free does not exist there.

Each time I evaluate this add I am amazed at the level of understanding these writers of have the psychology of consumers buying habits. Each word is thought out and placed where it needs to be for a reason.

Is it a SIN to use psychology to increase sales? Some would say that it is manipulative others would say that it is good marketing. The fact that they mention “custom finish fee” for the cabinet I am sure would exonerate them in any court of law.

But right underneath it they mention that you can get the “heater for free” This is a play on the understanding of the word heater. Combine this with a sense of urgency and you have a Marvelous ad that will generate allot of calls of people who understand a heater to be the whole package not he actual electric heater by itself without custom cabinets which are sold at a separate cost.

I will leave the final decision up to the consumer as to how they feel when they call and find out that they have to pay for the custom cabinets. Good copywriters know how to get a consumer to hang on to every word that feeds into what the consumer wants to believe.

     Recently I have been getting an increased number of calls form contractors who are highly disappointed with the lead aggregators that they have been working with. If you don't know what a lead agregator is then let me take a few minutes to share it with you. It is best you know now before you get caught up in this sticky spider web that leads to nothingness.

     A lead agregator is a company that places advertisements in specific locations to get leads so they can sell the   same leads to multiple contractors. (That sucks) Contractors in turn then bid and compete against each other until they have just about given up most if not all of their profit just to get the job.

This sounds like a real recipe for success (yea right)

     On serious note that is definitely not my idea of a good home improvement lead, but contractors are doing this day in and day out spending thousands of dollars on these "CRAP" leads.

     When I get these phone calls I usually allow the contractors to vent because they have every right to be disappointed with the home improvement leads they are buying.   The expectations and the reality will never meet each other. After allowing these hard working guys to get it all out I explain to them that they have options.    Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with a potential client who asked me "kip can you guarentee me that you can provide me two contractor leads a day". I replied to him that if anyone guaranteed you two contractor leads a day with out testing your market they were most likely scammers.

Any real marketer knows that nothing is absolutely proven until its proven.

   He continued to try to fit me into the same box that has been painted by so many SEM, PPC, SEO companies on the market that are selling contractor marketing services.   I explained to him that I like to sleep at night ( though I only sleep about 4 hours) and the little sleep that I get I don't want it to be filed with nightmares of clients complaining that I have lost their money.

He then went on to try to compare pay per click with pay per call. He could not understand why a pay per call company was so confident they could get him 2 contractor leads a day but that I was hesitant to gaurentee how quickly an SEM campaign would begin to produce leads. I went on to try explain the difference between the two models.

If I were a pay per call company I would charge you lets say $80.00 a lead. My goal would be to sell you two leads a day times 30 days. This would be $4800. dollars. As the Pay Per Call company I would be looking to generate that lead at around half of what I am selling it to you for lets say around $40.00 dollars a lead. That would mean that I would make $2,400.00 per customer per month.

It sounds like a great business model.

Now in contrast to that you could hire a pay per click company and give them $2,400.00 (half the money that you paid the pay per call company) and tell them that your goal is to have a cost per acquisition (CPA) of $40. It is their job to now work to get you as many leads as the pay per call company can at half the price.  Better yet you could give them the same $4800 and get twice as many leads as you would with a pay per call company.

The benefit to going with a pay per call company is that you don't pay until you get a qualified exclusive lead. You are going to pay a heavy premium for that type of lead but you have less exposure. The alternative is to go with a competent pay per click company and set the acquisition price that you want to meet. With this method your exposure is upfront but you will save in the long run if the Pay Per Click company can meet your acquisition target.....
